A reflection from a group of rural deacons in Aotearoa New Zealand…

Called to Serve

We have learned
As Jesus came not to be served
But to serve
We as deacons are
Called to Serve

To our small community we bring the towel
Our sign of service.

This symbol is present in our rural community

Our tractors break down
We repair them
And wipe our hands on a greasy towel.

Meals are prepared and consumed
With joy or sorrow
Tea towels are used for work and friendship.

With Spring comes new life
Some births need our help
The lambing towel is used to wipe and warm

Towels are used everyday
To dry new babies
To shower the elderly
And when caring for the sick
The smallest towel of all is used
To wipe tears of happiness or pain.

We have learned as deacons …
we are called to serve.
